WELL Building Tip #1: Lighting Is One of the Most Powerful Design Tools
At Oculus Inc., we believe great design is measured not only by how a building looks, but by how it supports the people inside it. In this blog series, Oculus Inc.’s WELL Accredited Professional (WELL AP), Joanne Fields, breaks down the WELL Building principles with practical wellness-driven design tips. Because when spaces are designed with people in mind, everyone benefits.
In our first post, Joanne shares why thoughtful lighting is one of the first considerations in every project and how it can influence the way people feel, work, and experience a space:
As a WELL AP Interior Designer, one of the first things I consider in a space isn’t just how it looks, it’s how it supports the people using it every day.
People often think of lighting as a design finish. Lighting influences nearly every aspect of how we experience a space, from our sleep patterns and concentration to our energy levels and mood.
That’s why natural lighting is one of the ten concepts within the WELL Building Standard. Thoughtful lighting design matters because it can:
- Support healthy circadian rhythms
- Reduce eye strain and visual fatigue
- Improve focus, alertness, and productivity
- Enhance mood and overall comfort
When natural daylight isn’t available, selecting the right artificial lighting – with appropriate color temperature, intensity, and controls – can make a meaningful difference.
Good design isn’t just about creating beautiful spaces. It’s about creating environments that help people feel their best.
At Oculus Inc., lighting decisions begin early in the design process. Rather than treating lighting as a finishing detail, our architects and interior designers collaborate with engineers to balance daylight access, occupant comfort, energy performance, and long-term flexibility. Whether designing healthcare environments, workplaces, government facilities, or retail spaces, we consider how lighting supports the people using the building every day.
