WELL Building Design: Improve Air Quality

Improve Air Quality

WELL Building Tip #2: Indoor Air Quality is the Foundation of a Healthy Building

In this blog series, Oculus Inc.’s WELL Accredited Professional (WELL AP), Joanne Fields, breaks down the WELL Building principles with practical wellness-driven design tips.

In this post, Joanne shares the importance of indoor air quality and why clean, healthy air is one of the most impactful ways to support occupant wellness in interior environments:

When people think about healthy buildings, they often notice comfortable furniture, natural light, or inviting finishes. What they don’t notice, but experience every day, is the quality of the air they breathe.

Indoor air quality affects far more than comfort. It influences cognitive performance, energy levels, respiratory health, and overall well-being. Because most people spend nearly 90% of their time indoors, the design decisions that impact ventilation, filtration, and material selection can have lasting effects on occupant health.

The WELL Building Standard recognizes clean air as one of the most important components of a healthy indoor environment. The WELL Air concept focuses on reducing pollutants, improving ventilation, and enhancing overall indoor air quality through intentional design strategies.

As an interior designer, this can be integrated through:
• Low-VOC materials and finishes
• Thoughtful ventilation and air filtration systems
• Source control of contaminants (like proper storage and zoning)
• Regular monitoring of indoor air quality

At Oculus Inc., we begin considering air quality long before a building opens by coordinating with mechanical engineers, evaluating material selections, and planning spaces that support healthy airflow. From healthcare clinics and laboratories requiring stringent environmental controls to corporate workplaces focused on employee wellness, we help clients create environments where clean air supports comfort, cognitive performance, health, and long-term well-being. Good design doesn’t stop at what people can see, it also considers what they breathe.
