WELL Building Tip #8: Choose Materials to Shape Healthier Buildings
Joanne Fields, WELL AP, continues sharing the WELL Building principles with practical wellness-driven design tips.
In this post, Joanne breaks down the importance of material selection beyond the aesthetics:
The materials used in our buildings have a direct impact on the air we breathe, the surfaces we interact with, and the overall health of our spaces.
One of the key concepts within the WELL Building Standard is Materials, selecting products that support human health, reduce exposure to harmful chemicals, and promote transparency.
As a WELL AP at Oculus Inc., I collaborate with our clients, project teams, manufacturers, and specification partners to make informed material selections that align with WELL principles. While architects do not manufacture products or perform material testing, we play an important role in researching options, evaluating product information, and prioritizing solutions that support healthier indoor environments.
Some ways Oculus supports the Materials concept through design and collaboration include:
- Specifying low-emitting materials that support better indoor air quality
- Reviewing product ingredients and considering opportunities to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals
- Prioritizing transparency through third-party certifications and product disclosures
- Supporting sustainable and responsibly sourced materials
- Collaborating with consultants, manufacturers, and contractors to identify products that meet performance, durability, aesthetic, and wellness goals
Material choices can have a lasting impact on occupant health, indoor environmental quality, and the overall sustainability of a project. By making thoughtful, informed decisions, project teams can help create spaces that are healthier for the people who use them every day.
Healthy buildings are the result of collaboration – bringing together architects, engineers, consultants, manufacturers, contractors, and clients to create environments that benefit both the people and the planet.
