WELL Building Design: Build Community

WELL Building Tip #10: Great Buildings Foster Community Connections

At Oculus Inc., we believe great design is measured not only by how a building looks, but by how it supports the people inside it. In this blog series, Oculus Inc.’s WELL Accredited Professional (WELL AP), Joanne Fields, breaks down the WELL Building principles with practical wellness-driven design tips. Because when spaces are designed with people in mind, everyone benefits.

In our final post, Joanne looks at Community and why great buildings bring people together:

Successful buildings do more than house people, they help connect them.

Whether in a workplace, healthcare facility, or community space, thoughtful design can encourage collaboration, foster inclusion, and strengthen a sense of belonging. The physical environment plays an important role in shaping workplace culture by creating opportunities for interaction, supporting diverse needs, and making people feel welcomed and valued.

One of the key concepts within the WELL Building Standard is Community, creating environments that support inclusion, engagement, belonging, and overall well-being. Strong communities help people feel connected to their workplace, their colleagues, and the organization’s mission.

As a WELL AP at Oculus Inc., I work with clients and project teams to understand how workplace design can support culture and community. While architecture alone cannot create community, thoughtful design can encourage connection, collaboration, and a sense of belonging.

Some ways Oculus supports the Community concept through design and collaboration include:

  • Creating a variety of gathering spaces that encourage connection and collaboration
  • Designing inclusive environments that support diverse users and needs
  • Providing spaces for both formal and informal interactions
  • Supporting workplace culture through amenities, shared experiences, and community-focused destinations
  • Creating environments that promote engagement, well-being, and a sense of belonging

The most successful workplaces are not just functional, they are places where people feel valued, supported, and connected. By designing spaces that encourage interaction and strengthen relationships, project teams can help cultivate a healthier and more engaged workplace community.

Building community is a collaborative effort involving leadership, workplace policies, culture, and the physical environment. Through thoughtful planning and design, architects can help create spaces that bring people together and support meaningful human connections.

This concludes our blog series on WELL Building concepts and practical ways they can be incorporated into workplace design. If you are interested in learning more about integrating the WELL Building concepts into your environment, email Joanne Fields at joannef@oculusinc.com.
