Project Description

From feasibility study through final occupancy, Oculus Inc. led the design and delivery of the new SouthSide Early Childhood Center, a vital community anchor that embodies inclusive, high-quality early childhood education. Our award-winning design team worked closely with SouthSide and its partners through every phase, including programming, fundraising, community engagement, and advocacy to bring this vision to life on St. Louis’ South Side.

The two-story facility features nine classrooms, an indoor gross motor/playroom, therapy spaces, a teaching kitchen, a reading room, staff offices, and a welcoming family lobby. Infant and toddler classrooms connect directly to secure outdoor learning/play spaces, promoting seamless integration between indoor and outdoor environments. Designed with the user in mind, the building’s layout supports efficient circulation, acoustic control, and natural daylighting throughout.

The light-filled design celebrates SouthSide’s history and mission while delivering modern functionality and durability. A bold green stair, playful interior accents, and calming color palettes offer a vibrant yet soothing atmosphere. The selection of tilt-up concrete construction addressed the site’s acoustic and insulation challenges due to its proximity to public transit, while also enabling cost-effective construction and a masonry aesthetic that complements the neighborhood context.
